Ruddington Shops Update

Earlier this month we revealed how a new ‘Farm Shop’ has opened at The White Horse Inn on Wednesdays to Saturdays. There are now further, exciting Ruddington shop changes to report – and some still to come.

Firstly, ‘ASDA On The Move’ which RUDDINGTON.info reported a year ago would be coming to Euro Garages’ expanded Ruddington Service Station premises along Loughborough Road, has finally arrived!  It stocks up to 2,500 ASDA own brand, premium own-label ‘Extra Special’ and branded products – including bakery, fresh, chilled and ‘ambient’ groceries – along with a range of fresh produce. It has replaced the rather ephemeral SPAR shop – but the existing Greggs and Subway on the premises have been retained and are now operating alongside the new ASDA.

On the fuel side, owner EG Group has been promising a rollout of electric vehicle rapid charging facilities alongside its petrol and diesel pumps at many of its UK forecourts. However, there’s no news of any coming to Ruddington yet – which currently still has no public car charging points at all.

Just around the corner you’ll find the new home of popular Ruddington vehicle retailer National Car Finder. Specialising in sourcing and delivering used cars and vans to customers’ required specifications, Jon Lee‘s business is now in the former ‘corner shop’ premises at 21, Ashworth Avenue. He says his latest move from Easthorpe Street has been prompted by a long term lease being available at ‘NCF House’ – ensuring his business can remain in Ruddington for the foreseeable future.

Jon is also currently in training for the 2023 London Marathon in April. You can read all about his fundraising for the The Bodie Hodges Foundation, including a ‘Charity Day’ next month at Ruddington Grange Golf Club>>HERE<<.

Meantime, at 15, Church Street, some two and a half years after Shane Ginty locked the door to Ruddington Village Butchers for the final time, the empty premises have been bought by village entrepreneur Brian Perkins. Brian is already the owner/landlord of several of Ruddington’s other shops, and his company was responsible for the concept and construction of ‘The Courtyard’ precinct off High Street, completed in September 2020. He tells us a thorough refurbishment of the old butchers shop is now almost complete and so it will be ready to rent out by the end of this month. Although it’s a ‘blank canvas’ as to what sort of business might go in there now, Brian’s preference is for a retailer with a different ‘offer’ to other shops which already exist in Ruddington.

Brian has ALSO submitted new plans to Rushcliffe Borough Council to demolish the existing outbuildings and walls behind the remodelled shop and erect a two storey extension to the rear – creating three additional residential units. You can find this planning application 23/01145/FUL and all relevant documents >>HERE<<.

Also in our village centre, shoppers may already have spotted the new shop front at 18, High Street – the former home of Sweetie Boutique and Sweet Moments. Following another refurbishment, it’s changing from sweet to savoury as the owners of East Leake Pizza open up a new village branch there. Ruddington Pizza Kitchen is also expected to offer burgers, sides and kebabs – but no launch date has yet been announced.

18, Wilford Road

Finally, there’s still a degree of mystery as to what might happen next with Aidy’s former barbershop on Dutton’s Hill. After earlier cafe plans were scrapped, it’s known the new owner of 18, Wilford Road is converting it into three individual dwellings instead – one of these containing the existing shop front with living accommodation at the rear and upstairs. What small business might move back into there is yet to be seen.
